We used to put the egg shells in our compost, which is perfectly fine, but now we keep them separate, let them dry in the sun.
Once they're completely dry and are brittle, I put them in our blender and crush them into powder. I don't know if this would work in all blenders, but our Vitamix has a wet container and a dry container, so I use the dry container for this task.
Once the shells are rendered into powder, we add it to the Bettys' food. Egg shells are basically calcium and we learned that it's good to add it back into their food supply. This will help keep the egg shells of the new eggs they lay nice and strong. So, that's what we're doing now. Happy Bettys, happy eggs, happy us.
